RESUMO

During the last 100 years polymer matrix composites (PMC) became the most important material class used to equip brake systems in the automotive industry. Due to the growing technical and economic demands of the industry wear has become one of the most important considerations during the development process of these products. This study proposes the creation of a specific model for polymer matrix friction materials that describes the wear behavior, involving the most important parameters acting during the braking process. This model was tested through standard wear procedures, carried out in an inertial dynamometer. The inertial dynamometer used in this study was equipped with a light brake system such as that used in passenger cars. Wear tests are shown for three typical formulas used for commercial vehicle applications. These three formulations have different compositions as well as distinct mechanical and physical properties. Wear behaviour curves are plotted for these materials and a comparison with the model was made, with a very good correlation for two of the materials tested.
