RESUMO

The microhardness measurement of metallic thin films is a destructive process. The test requires the cross section cut of the workpiece to the direct measurement. There are limits to the film thickness too. This work presents a microhardness measurement technique acquired directly on the surface-coated material. The application of the technique requires conventional microhardness measurements on both coated and uncoated substrates and a knowledge of the film thickness. The film hardness is obtained trom these data by the use of a formula that is based on a physical model of film deformation during indentation. This model was verified for chromium and nickel coatings. The hardness values obtained by this model were compared with the values measured on the cross section of the workpiece. The comparison made clear the necessity of the model constants standardization, for each surfacecoated system.
