RESUMO

In the study of miscible displacement in reservoirs developed by a five spot pattem, application of standard finite difference methods may lead to numerical dispersion, grid orientation effects and overshoot at the miscible front. The main purpose of this work is to present tne application of the scheme proposed by Patankar [6] to obtain the discretized form of the Convection-Difusion equation. The procedure described ensures that convergence of the finite difference solution to the exact solution of the differential system will not depend on the ratio of convecion to diffusion rates. In order to minimize grid orientation effects in the modeling of miscible displacement problems, a nine point discretization scheme, based on Bertiger &Padmanabhan [1], is used. To test the proposed method, laboratory experiments were conducted in a quarter of a five spot mode!. Agreement between predicted and experimental profiles was excellent
