RESUMO

The study of nanocomposites, object of this project, was divided in two independent experimental parts. In the first esperimental part the obtention of organophilic montmorillonite from the cation xchange of a Na-montmorillonite for cations of quaternary hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, in aqueous solution, to prepare polymeric nanocomposites was studied. The obtained materials were characterized by FT-IR and x-ray and results showed that the modification process is complex and requires further study. Compositions of polypropylene and NA-montmorillonite made from melt intercalation direct technique of Na-montmorillonite with hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide as reactive compatibilizer were also prepared (note that in some compositions polypropylene-graftmaleic anhydride was added). This techique is used in order to have the simultaneous intercalation of alkylammmonium ions in montmorillonite, making in organophilic, with the intercalation of the polymeric chains into the interlayer of the clay. The materials were characterized by x-ray and the results showed no effect on the clay modification for nanomomposites. In the second part, nanocomposites of polypropylene and commercial montmorillonite organophilic with polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride as coupling agent were prepared though the melt intercalation by twin-screw extruder. The materials were characterized by x-ray, tensile and impact according ASTM D638 and D256 test methods, respectively, scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, flammability test UL-94 and reflectance spectrophotometry ...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
