RESUMO

This research examined the relationship between Separation Anxiety and Panic Disorder. A group of Case-Control with 68 patients were studied. The case group with 30 patients with Panic Disorder with and without Agoraphobia, previosly diagnosed using DSM-TV criteria were identified and matched by age and sex with a "normaTcontrol group (30). The other control group were consisted of 8 patients with Major Depressive Disorder diagnosed too using DSM-IV criteria. The patients were recrutied from the Psychiatric Ambulatory at Campinas University Hospital. The results showed that 23 (32%) patients of the Case-Control group were diagnosed with Separation Anxiety Disorder of infancy, childhood or adolescence using DSM-IV criteria. Of 22 patients with Separation Anxiety Disorder, 12 (54%) were diagnosed with Panic Disorder with and without Agoraphobia, 5 (23%) with Major Depressive Disorder and 5 (23%) without any psychiatric disorders. According to patients with Panic Disorder report we point out dependent behaviour, looses situations before the panic attack and the feeling of helplessness to illness and life. The results of this study also highlight the continuing need to develop others researches to examine the relationship between Separation Anxiety Disorder and others childhood and adult age disorders
