RESUMO

All over the world, landfill is recognized as a reliable and viable pratice due to your economical, environmental and technical aspects. However, the increasing of the requirements concerning the environmental protection and the landfill stability demands from engineers a deeper knowledge on the mechanical properties of landfill materials. Bearing in mind the above problem, it was constructed a large scale direct shear equipment with the purpose of investigate the mechanical properties of municipal solid waste (MSW). The samples used in the experimental program consisted of fresh waste, supplied by 2 of 19 administrative region of Distrito Federal, wich it was sampled in the waste treatment unit. It is important to attract attention to the fact that, although sampled in a treatment unit, the samples were not subjected to treatment. The large scale direct shear equipment showed being competent in the carried out experiments showing satisfactory results. The results revealed that the resistance peak was not mobilized, even for maximum strain of 50%. The resistance parameters (friction angle and cohesion) of samples are into the range reported by Sanchez-Alciturri et al (1993) to laboratory experiments using this material.
