RESUMO

The dissertation aims to verify the written patterns utilized by children to represent numerals quantities in school external environment. Based upon Jean Piaget knowledge construction theory this study investigates the relationship between numeric representation and the level of children s cognitive development . The empirical study made a systematic examination of a six to ten years old group of fifty children at different development stages utilizing clinical methods to diagnose their operative behavior and their problem-situations solving strategies using graphic symbols. The results made evident the use of a diversity of numerical graphic symbols in all children development stages. They showed a variety of representations covering from drawing to number writing without relation with the children cognitive level.
