RESUMO

The objective of this study was to establish a prevalence of genital infections during the third trimestre of a normal pregnancy and identify social ¬demographical and sexual factors associated with these infections.1"he following study (cross section design) was carried out on 328 pregnant women accompanied at the Pre-Natal Outpatient Clinic for normal pregnancies at the Department of Gynaecology, School of Medical Science, UNICAMP from October 1991 to F ebruary 1993. The diagnosis of infections was based on the findings from the bacterioscopy taken from vaginal discharge, cervical cytology and direct immunofluorescence for Chlamydia trachomatis. The results were analysing with the Qui-Square test and Logistic Regression. The total prevalence of the infection was 40.6% of which: 19.3% vaginal candidiasis, 9.5% bacterial vaginosis, 6.7% alteration in the vaginal flora, 2.1 % Chlamydia trachomatis infection, 2.1 % vaginal trichomoniasis and 0.9% was due to Human Papillomavirus. The vaginal candidiasis was the only infection which id not present any association with the characteristics analysed. The others had at least one associated risk factor: age of first sexual intercourse before I 7 years old, three or more sexual partners, two or less sexual intercourses per week, lack of a permanent sexual partner, a S TD or PID past, and three or more previous spontaneous miscarriages. The results alert to the inclusion of some questions about sexual behavior and search of cervico-vaginal infections on pre-natal visits, for the hight prevalence of some or the possible perinatal complications of others
