RESUMO
Liquefaction is a phenomenon that happens in saturated granular soils when undergoing loadings rapid enough to produce great pore pressure increase with the consequent reduction of the effective stress and the shear strength. In the mining context, the possibility of the liquefaction occurrence in the granular tailings, when saturated, is a relevant concern that must be taken into account in the evaluation of the tailings dams safety. The liquefaction may be activated by dynamic loads, such as those caused by earthquakes, as well as by static loads, such as, by instance, the construction of a raising dyke in a tailings dam. As the Brazilian territory is located on a predominantly assismic area, the scope of this dissertation is restricted only to the static liquefaction, with especial focus on granular tailings In this dissertation the methodology proposed by Olson (2001) is presented, which evaluates the liquefaction susceptibility, the liquefaction trigger and the flow failure stability analysis. This methodology uses co-relations between SPT and/or CPT, corrected penetration resistance values, and shear strength ratios, obtained from the back-analysis of liquefaction flow failure case histories. This dissertation main purpose is the static liquefaction evaluation of an iron ore tailings dam by the Olson Methodology (2001). Using a second methodology, called Comparative Methodology, based on triaxial tests results, it is also aimed the validation of the Olson Methodology (2001) as the applicable technique for the static liquefaction evaluation of tailings dam. The results found in the analysis carried out in this dissertation show that the Olson Methodology (2001) is a simple, effective and conservative tool, which may be incorporated in the routine of tailings dam design.
