RESUMO

The Guanabara bay represents a coastal environment propitious to the studies of environmental quality, for presenting an exuberant nature, with innumerable ecosystems in contraposition with one of the highest urban and industrial concentrations of the country. The toxicity of metals is determined not only by its concentration, but by the chemical form it presents in coastal ecosystems. Recent works have been using methods of speciation of metals and the determination of the bacterial activity to identify the bioavaliability of metals for the trophic chain. The present work consists on the statistical confrontation of data of total metal concentration as well as its speciation, with the bacterial activity and organic substances, as boarding to verify the bioavaliability of the existing pollutants in the bay. Sediment samples of 12 stations within the bay, in areas considered critical, in terms of pollution levels, were collected during the rainy and dry seasons. The results had indicated great sazonal and spacial variability of the metal concentrations. The rain was shown that pluviosity is an important element, increasing the superficial runoff of the city, and acting as metal source for Pb, Cr and Ni. The naval activities had also revealed as unquestionable sources of Cu, where its highest concentrations had been found in the Niterói harbour, independently of the seazon of the year. The reducible phase showed high importance in the majority of metals, despite the anoxia conditions of the bottom, while the phases soluble and residual had presented minor weight, being inexistent in some cases. Variability of exoenzimes was not verified, as well as with organic substance, thus reaffirming the narrow linking between these parameters. Highlighting the organic substance as determinative of the geochemistry dynamic of the bay.
