RESUMO

This dissertation focuses the influence of the process of urbanization in urban basin. The study encloses the Basin of River Cobre, situated in the geographic region of the Rail Suburb, in Salvador city, Bahia State. Two objectives were defined: to study the influence of the process of urbanization in the generation of factors which impact the quality of water of the River Cobre; and, to identify guidelines for preservation and conservation of water resources presents in the Master Plan for Urban Development of Salvador city. In this research it was used qualitative methodology; the data were obtained by bibliographical, documental and field researches. The study to come to the conclusions as follows: the process of urbanization in the basin of River Cobre area influenced negatively in the water quality because of the characteristics of urbanization developed: spontaneous, random, irregular, with a inconsistent density regard to the support ability of the aquatic environment, neighbouring to the área of waterfalls and river-head, with removal of vegetation and without infrastructure for sanitation. The process of urbanization with the characteristics mentioned influenced in the generation of factors which impacts the water quality of the River Cobre, as: human settlement, livestock, agricultural area, clothes washing, neighborhoods surrounding, industrial complex, among others. The main negative consequences for the aquatic ecosystem, identified in the study, were: assoreamento; destruction of the ecosystem of the river-bed and river-bank; direct drainage of: solid waste, oils, domestic sewage and packaging of agricultural chemicals; changes in water quality; loss of aquatic fauna; ecological imbalance of the environment relationship; reduction of biodiversity and water table contamination. The impairment of water quality influenced in the life quality for community of the área. The research also concluded that the Master Plan for Urban Development of the city presents guidelines aimed at conservation and preservation of water resources. At the end of the study recommend the reversal of water degradation on Basin of River Cobre by means of government and popular determination because of the ecological, cultural and religious values at the area to the Salvador city.
