RESUMO

In this work it was developed a new version of the ionospheric model SUPIM (Sheffield University Plasmasphere Ionosphere Model), in which the ionospheric E region and equatorial zonal drift velocity calculations for F region were included. This new version, named as SUPIM-E (Sheffield University Plasmasphere Ionosphere Model Enhanced) provide applied studies for the equatorial and low latitude thermosphere-ionosphere system. SUPIM-E results for different solar activities and season were validated using experimental data registered over Cachoeria Paulista (22°S, 45°W) and Jicamarca (12°S, 77° W). From SUPIM-E results it was noticed that it is not possible to get realistic results for equatorial E region ignoring the transport terms, in contrast with published works. It was noticed that equatorial vertical plasma drifts (eastwards electric field) affect the zonal drifts velocities during all local times. The supposition that zonal drift should be equal to weighted zonal wind with integrated Pedersen conductivity does not seem realistic. Finally, the comparison between theoretical zonal drift velocities and experimental velocities of plasma bubble over Cachoeira Paulista shows evidence that each one of these velocities has different behavior and presents no correlated values, mainly during well developed bubble phase.
