RESUMO

One of the constituent characteristics of the lexicographical workmanships destined to children is the illustration use for the visual representation of the lexicon. On the other hand, the research in Lexicology and Lexicography usually focus only on the verbal dimension of these workmanships. This research investigates the use of the visual language in illustrated dictionaries for children from 7 to 10 years, taking as reference the dictionaries selected for the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PNLD) of the Ministério da Educação on the year of 2006. The study argues on the function attributed to the way of visual representation in the illustrated childrens dictionaries, considering its joint with the verbal language. In this sense, the analysis of the data describes the main types of visual structures used in the illustration of entries, as well as the semantic relation established between text and image. For in such a way, the Visual Grammar elaborated by Kress and van Leeuwen is taken as theoretician basis (1996), inside of the perspective of the theory of the multimodality of the representations; among with the concept of coerência intersemiótica, elaborated by Camargo (1998); and the works on childrens dictionaries developed by Stein (1991) and Rossi (2000). The presented analysis has for objective to understand how can the illustration contribute for a clearer and more accessible description of the lexical meaning of a word for a beginning reader, as well as reflect on the criteria that must be observed in the planning and the composition of an illustrated dictionary for children.
