RESUMO

Quality improvement in industry deserves an increasing attention from the scientific community for the competi tive differential it may bring One of the pioneers in this area, the Japanese engineer Genichi Taguchi, presented in the beginning of the 1960 s a novel methodology, based in the fact that variability reduction results in quality improvement. Through off-line experiments, this methodology seeks to find process factors that can be readjusted in order to reduce variability. A key component of this methodology is the statistic, also known as performance measure, to be used in the experiment analysis. Focusing both theoretical and applied aspects, this text makes a comparative study between the performance measure proposed by Taguchi (called signal-to-noise ratio) and some alternatives proposed in the literature
