RESUMO

This study evaluates the effects of Dexamethasone in the hemostasis values of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery patients. For this purpose, 21 patients, of both sexes, aged among 15 and 42 years, were selected, and treated with two 10 mg intravenous injection of Disodium Phosphate Dexamethasone. Three samples of intravenous blood were drawn. The first one was drawn immediately before the first steroid dose and surgery, and was used as control. The following samples were drawn 4 hours after each experimental drug doses. The Bleeding Time, the Coagulation Time, the Prothrombin Time, and the partial Thromboplastin Time were evaluated, besides the Platelets Counts. The results showed that Dexamethasone did not interfere with the hemostasis values, that presented under normal limits. Nevertheless, a discrete tendency to hypercoagulation was noted. The Coagulation Time, after the second Dexamethasone dose, was significantly smaller (p<0,05) than the values after the first steroid dose
