RESUMO

This study was carried out in the region of Saco dos Limões, located in the Baía Sul, a cove which separates the island of Florianopolis, in the State of Santa Catarina, from the mainland portion of the city. The data are the result of the environmental monitoring carried out by the University of Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI) since 1997, as a result of the landfill and dredging works carried out in Baía Sul for the construction of the SC-South "Via Expressa" highway. Over two years (2001-2002), bimonthly dredges were carried out using nets in six sampled areas (A1 to A6) both during the day, and at night, resulting in the collection of 26,667 specimens belonging to 27 families and 65 taxa, with the main objectives of characterizing the Baía Sul as an estuary environment, verifying the changes in fish assemblages over the two years of the study, and carrying out a possible environmental assessment of the study area, in view of the construction works carried out in this area, the fish assemblages were described in terms of their composition and distribution, associated with the environmental parameters of temperature and salinity (surface and bottom) and water depth, while at same time, fish were collected in each sample area. Nine families (Gerreidae, Ariidae, Engraulidae, Paralichthydae, Carangidae, Sciaenidae, Tetraodontidae, Triglidae and Sparidae) were represented by a higher number of taxa, with eleven taxa dominating the collections in terms of number, five of these (Genidens genidens, Cetengrauilis edentulus, Eucinostomus gula, Eucinostomus argenteus and Citharichthys spilopterus) together making up just over 70% of the total. Significant differences in surface and bottom salinity were detected when the effects were tested (ANOVA) by month, year and sampling area. Differences were also found in the number of individuals caught for the different years, months, periods (day and night) and sampling areas, emphasizing the low catch in February and December (summer) and the high catch in June (winter). This characterization of the Baía Sul shows the influence of environmental factors in the distribution and composition of the fish assemblages. However, it was not possible to confirm the influence of the dredging and landfill works, as there are no data from before the works. A longer time series is therefore needed, to establish patterns of use of the area by the fish, and from these data, to detect any abnormalities and their possible causes
