RESUMO

Objective: This study is intended to identify the social-demographic characteristics and the sources of occupational stress for nurses working in the Emergency Room (ER), 1nfirmaries of Clinical/Trauma Emergency (CE/TE) and Cardiopneumo Infinnaries (CP1) at the Clinics Hospital of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Campinas, SP. Method: This is a descriptive-comparative study, which consisted of a population of N=224 nurses. Through a voluntary sampling, n=127, were studied, which included nurses, technicians and assistant nurses. The research tool used was the Occupational Stress Indicator - OS1 -, developed by COOPER, SLOAN, WILLIAMS (1988). Results: It was not confumed that emergency room nurses bear the highest occupational stress rates. Although there is a considerable propensity to stress in the sampling as a hole, the levels of occupational stress found were low. When detected in higher levels, the stress is related to dissatisfaction with the work organization, Type A personality, and deficient physical and mental health. The results were discussed as ftom the work-stress approach, this being regarded as a dynamic process between environrnental stressors and personality traits. Conclusion: The high rates obtained for stress propensity shown in the sampling lead necessarily to the issue of prevention as a means for the non-settlemerit or reduction of stress at the workplace
