RESUMO

This work examines the relationship between stressful life events, coping and successful aging. The most stressful life events were assessed according to the respondents own evaluation. This was done through an inventory which classified as egocentric the self-related events and as non-egocentric the family-related ones. The coping behaviors they used were identified through open-end questions which after its content analisys allowed their classification into four different ways of coping: behavioral, cognitive, problem focused and emotion focused. The content analysis also allowed the identification of the following resources used for coping: social support, personal beliefs, existential beliefs, social skills and problem solution skills. Successful aging was measured by two multidimension scales, Likert tipe, intended to detect life satisfaction and aging adaptation. The respondents were 68 adults reasonably healthy and active, ranging in age from 50 to 80 years old, mostly married women, housewife?s, enrolled in a continuous education course. The findings show a higher frequency of positive opinions about present life and about age related possibilities. The results also show that the respondents considered the non-egocentric events as more stressful, and reveal that cognitive and emotion-focused strategies were mostly used for coping. The data also indicated the the primary personal resources used by older adults for coping were existential beliefs and social support
