RESUMO

This Dissertation focused on the religious discourse used by a new-Pentecostal group called Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God), Hereafter IURD, founded in Rio de Janeiro ,Brazil in 1978 by a group- of dissidents from the New Life Church. The aim of this study is to conduct a discourse analysis of the persuasion strategies used by IURD in its socio-discoursal practices : communications, advertising, and written texts. This subject was chosen because of the social relevance of IURD as a religious organization of great visibility in Brazil and also abroad, where it also operates. IURD reaches millions of people today with its religious communication. It uses a complex of mass media which enhances its ability to impact audiences ideologically. In this research, use is made of Critical Discourse Analysis, an approach that takes language as a social practice embedded in cultural Contexts. An analysis is made of levels and discourse strategies used by IURD and a description-and-explanation is provided for the social and textual functions characterizing that organizationÂs Discourse, especially in terms of the purposes and communicative goals of its participants in discourse interaction. The underlying theoretical framework benefits from insights inspired by Rhetoric, Advertising, and Marketing. The fundamental hypothesis in this study is that there is colonization in the order of IURDian discourse, by the Economy and Market systems. The main corpus consists of texts from the electronic newspaper Folha Universal (Universal Leaf),specifically, the Opinion Column written by Bishop Macedo. Also included are samples of interpretive reports, published from August 2003 to October 2002, taken from 53 issues . Such corpus is enlarged with other IURD publications. The selected texts are analyzed on pragmatic, argumentative, rhetorical and ideological levels, so as to identify discourse strategies of persuasion. The research results are the identification of more frequently used arguments, metaphors, fallacies, and hyperboles and an analysis of the textual and social discoursal functions carried out in IURDian religious communication
