RESUMO

The object of study of this dissertation are the variations among contento contention, and dispersion in art. The first argument comes from the verification of producedures stemming from painting being used in contemporary sculptural practices, more precisely, in some works by the Brazilian artist Tunga. In a set of sculptures that pays homage to Morandi, the artist sculpts urns and calices in bronze and then coats them with make-up.The three operations involvedin production carry a huge symbolic charge, acting, at the same time, as a sort of pictural procedures metaphor. The "fat" element, thus represented as the bond betwen the full and the empty in the sculpture, is to be found present in ali the artist s work, as well as in those of other contemporary artists who use soft masses as an expressive means in their works.Thissearch for soft masses, denominated as pictorial search in this text, reveals the quest for a "plain" space in wich the volumes remain connected, thus abdicating the presence of emptiness in the work. On the other hand, inversions provoked by negative presences are also analysed. The wide concept of negative intervention is dealt with in the text as of metaphysical constructions by De Chirico, where volumes take shape to show the place of its absence. Some of Marcel Duchamp s procedures are also analysed, conceived to destructuralize codes of representation and, in the area of brazilian art, Carlos Fajardo s attitude to the above is considered as well. In the second chapter, some of my own work is presented
