RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to rebuild critically one of the possible histories of the National School of Physical Education and Sport (ENEFD), the first teacchers training school of physical education which was linked to a university m Brazil. The study was based not only on written sources but also on the testimony of some people who were elose to the daily life of the school. In order to carry out the study Oral History was used as a methodological approach. There are two basic reasons for the development of this study. The first is that the ENEFD is a cornerstone and part of the memory of the Brazilian physical education. The second reason is the possibility of a clearer understanding of some of the present debate. This possibility would be brought about from new facts, new approaches and interpretations which could restructure existing historical conceptions. There are six major conclusions. First, the creation of the ENEFD was part of the political project of the Estado Novo. Second, the process of creation of the ENEFD was similar to that of other teachers training schools, all of them under the influence of members of the Brazilian Army. Third, the most well-renowned period of the ENEFD was that under the direction of the physicians. Fourth, the ENEFD played a very important role not only producing but also making public knowledge and intonnation. Five, the students also played their part in the making of this process. Finally, the decadence of the ENEFD was related not only to external forces (the change of the capital of the country to Brasilia, the University Reform, the fusion between the State of Guanabara and the State of Rio de Janeiro) but also to internal forces (slow replacement of members of staff, students movement under siege, physicians loss of power)
