RESUMO

This study aims to investigate students use of different representations while doing function activities, after undertaking a methodological teaching approach based on function graph sketch, in which the geometric perspective is the starting point. The research was theoretically based on the Semiotic Theory of Representation Register of Raymond Duval. In this sense, the subjects of this research were 32 students of a pos-graduation latu-sensu course, whom had already undertaken the Integral and differential calculus course, in their undergration course as well as in the posgraduation course. Before the intervention were undertaken, a test was applied to the students in order to analyze their potentiality of using different representation languages. After four months the same test were applied, that we called pos-test. In the pos-test application, only 25 students were presented. The tests focused on how students use the representations when they were questioned of the main elements to sketch a graph of a rational function with third grade polynomials, such as: domain, image, increasing/decreasing, first and second derivatives, concavity, critical points, extremes locals, inflection points and asymptotes. The results revealed a strong tendency, before intervention, of students use only one language, in general the natural language, their first language. The students who used the symbolic language were those with better results in the pre-test. However, even those used only one language. In the pos-test, an students migration to use more than one language, in a first instance using a mixture of different languages without being a conversion of languages. Also, multiple languages with conversion were presented. The students showed difficulties on leading with the different languages to express intervals
