RESUMO

The following dissertation had as its principal objective to identify possible clinical-phonoaudiological developments stemming from complications in the initial mother-infant relationship. Inasmuch, it was primarily based on Winnicotts psychoanalytical perspective, with particular emphasis on the concept of personal growth. The method employed was that of clinical-qualitative research, with a single case study being presented. The case is that of a four year old child of Peruvian origin, born with a congenital craniofacial malformation- palatine fissure diagnosed six months after birth, whose parents lacked precise orientation on how to proceed with their child, especially with regard to feeding, which constitutes an initial moment in the mother-infant interaction. With the parents detailed family history report, obtained through sessions dedicated exclusively to them, and from records of the early therapeutic process experienced with the patient, it was possible to infer that the mothers original complications in caring for her son were reflected in issues brought forth by the child, mainly in its difficulty experimenting with new feeding situations, which also compromised his oral motricity. Results show the phonoaudiologists therapeutic approach, which fostered the establishment of a trusting relationship, assisted the patients discovering the possibility of experiencing new feeding situations and use of motor structures. The therapist also sought to accommodate the needs of the family, a common procedure in phonoaudiology when working with small children
