RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to analyzethe mechanicalbehavior of an artificial biological tendon when it undergoes uniaxial traction assays. The test were carried out until the tendons ruptured. These uniaxial mechanicaltraction assays were conducted on test bodies having an artificial biological tendon produced by the Institute of Cellular Biology at Unicamp. The control group was made up of calcaneus bovine and human tendons (gracilis and semitendinus muscle). The median cross-sectional area of the test bodies were defined. The mechanical parameters obtained were: ultimate load, relative deformation, rupture energy and modulus of elasticity. Basedon these parameters, it was possible to establishthe following: ~ the bovine (calcaneus) and human (gracilis and semitendinus muscle) tendon presented a ultimate tension strengh between 15 and 30 MPa, wile in the artificial tendon the ultimate tension strengh was less then 4 MPa. . ~ the extreme deformation values for the varying strain rate showed that the defromation of the bovine calcaneus tendon was two times more than that of the artificial tendon. ~ the diagram of force versus dislocation of the artificial tendon differed from that ofbovine and human tendons and showed lesser elasticity
