RESUMO

The present study is based on the present discussions related to the academic education and to the performance of registered nurses with specific educational program Lato Sensu post-graduation program in Obstetric Nursing in Brazil, taking into account specially the lacks in the process of medical attention to childbirth and birth in the region of the XV Regional Department of Health (XV RDH), São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. Objective: To characterize and to identify the Obstetric nurses academic education and professional insertion working at hospitals under the XV RDH jurisdiction. Method: It is a descriptive-exploratory study among obstetric nurses working at hospital of this region, which is subdivided into six microregions comprising an estimated area of 200 km2. Results and Discussion: It was found 43 hospitals in the XV RDH jurisdiction. Forty two out (97.7%) of 43 hospitals offered obstetric care with 469 beds, 47.5% are located especially in the microregion of São José do Rio Preto. In these hospitals work 451 nurses; 31 nurses (6.9%) with a Lato Sensu post-graduation program in Obstetric Nursing, who comprised the study population; 4 obstetric nurses work in 2 hospitals and 2 of them did not agree to participate. The total sample was composed of 25 female obstetric nurses; 48% were married; 96% live in the same county they work in; 52% were graduated from the Medical school of São José do Rio Preto FAMERP; 80% had nursing academic education between 1996 and 2002; 52% got their first job on the first month after graduation; 64% had majored in Obstetric Nursing because they like the subject; 84% concluded the postgraduation program in Obstetric Nursing between 2001 and 2004; 76% had xiii majored from FAMERP; 44% attended a course supported by the Brazilian Health Ministry, and 48% self-financed their courses; the majority have performed an average of 21 normal childbirths during the time they were attending the post-graduation program in Obstetric Nursing; 72% have highlighted as a positive aspect of the post-graduation program the good quality of clinical clerkship and the delivery room supervisors; 40% have reported as a negative aspect the necessity to travel to São Paulo city to attend clinical clerkship at delivery rooms; 52% of the obstetric nurses developed some kind of activity related to womens health services; 30.7% have reported difficulties to professionally interact with the obstetricians; 61.5% did not practice any childbirth; the majority of the nurses has worked more postpartally and in the care to the newborn infant. Conclusion: There were many difficulties related to the obstetric nurse professionally insertion in the XV RDH; however, we have found obstetric nurses who got the job due to the Lato Sensu post-graduation program in Obstetric Nursing. Further researches are needed in order to evaluate the assistance of the obstetric nurse through the view of the patient/client and of other professionals of the obstetrical team to subsidize actions that allow a larger participation of the obstetric nurse in providing medical attention to the women during the gravidic-puerperal cycle according to their professional competence and technical and legal qualifications.
