RESUMO

The process of wire electrical discharge machining is currently used in manufacturing most hard metal (tungsten carbide) dies and punches, used in steel stamping tools for electric motors. The home appliance, industrial electric motor, transformer and hermetic compressor industries, use progressive stamping tools, justifying a better understanding of the manufacturing process by Wire Electrical Discharge Machining # WEDM. An unsuitable working condition introduces defects in the layer limits of punches and dies that result in a drastic reduction in the life of these components. In this dissertation, a study was conducted to improve the machining process of hard metal by WEDM, with a focus on reducing the damages produced on the machined surface to increase the life of the dies and punches, and to also increase the productivity of the manufacturing process of these cutting elements. For this, an analysis was carried out of the input variables and their influence on the characteristics and the result of the work. The characteristic of the verified process was limited to the cutting rate (by the equipment#s technical limitations). The result of the work was evaluated by the geometric accuracy of the components produced, by the form and extent of the micro-cracks, by the extent of the zone thermally affected and by the vertical aspects of the roughness. From the results obtained it was possible to recommend more favorable work conditions, resulting in a longer life for the dies and punches as well as production cost minimization of these hard metal cutting items.
