RESUMO

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of the treatment of Class II malocclusion with the Mandibular Protraction Appliance (MPA) and the Jasper Jumper, associated with fixed orthodontic appliances. The sample used comprised 71 subjects, divided into three groups: Group 1, with 24 patients at a mean initial age of 12.36 years, treated with the Mandibular Protraction Appliance (MPA) for a mean period of 2.74 years; Group 2, with 25 patients at a mean initial age of 12.72 years, treated with the Jasper Jumper for a mean period of 2.15 years; and Control Group, including 22 subjects at a mean initial age of 12.67 years, who were not submitted to any type of orthodontic treatment and presenting Class II malocclusion, observed by a mean period of 2.12 years. It was evaluated the lateral cephalograms before and after orthodontic treatment of each subject from the three groups evaluated. Initial and final dentoskeletal cephalometric variables and changes with treatment were compared among the groups by ANOVA and Tukey test. The Jasper Jumper group presented a greater restriction of growth and anterior displacement of the maxilla and a greater maxillary retrusion and the MPA group showed a significantly greater increase of mandibular effective length. Both experimental groups showed a significant improve of maxillomandibular relationship and a significant reduction of the facial convexity in relation to control group. There was increase of posterior facial height in MPA group related to control. Maxillary incisors presented greater retrusion and palatal inclination in MPA group, with significant differences with Jasper Jumper and control groups. Regarding mandibular incisors, the MPA groups presented greater buccal inclination and Jasper Jumper group showed greater protrusion of these incisors, with significant differences to control group. MPA and Jasper Jumper groups presented an extrusion of mandibular molars, a decrease in overbite and overjet related to control, and MPA group presented decrease of overjet also in relation to the Jasper Jumper group.
