RESUMO

This study evaluated the local and systemic effects of LLLT in the initial process of bone repair after implantation of a PLLA-PGA screw in tibia of 24 New Zealand white rabbits. The sample was randomly divided into two groups, experimental and control. A PLLA-PGA screw was implanted in each tibia. In the experimental group, rabbits received applications of infrared laser (830nm, 4J/cm2, 100mW, 40.4 sec), only in the right tibia, in the immediate postoperative period and every 48 hours up to a maximum of 7 applications. The control group was not irradiated. Both were divided into 3 subgroups according to the observation time of 5, 15 and 30 days, after which the animals were killed. A histological analysis was performed to assess the degree of peri-implant bone formation, using a quantitative parameter and qualitative analysis. We compared the results between the right and the left tibia of the experimental group and both tibias of the control group over the three observation periods. The results of quantitative analysis showed greater initial bone formation in both tibias of the experimental group compared to the control group, in 5 days. The descriptive analysis showed that the newly formed trabeculae of the irradiated bones were slightly larger and thicker, in 5 days. In the other intervals, there were no statistically significant differences. The LLLT accelerated bone formation in 5 days, exerting both local and systemic effects.
