RESUMO

In the present work it is presented a study about Sports Un-training (sports retirement), a current theme related to the development of high-performance sports and until this moment has not had proper treatment, regardless of the sports development of nations. The goal of the research was characterize the health problems of retired athletes, from a physio-pathological, psychological and social perspective. The sampling utilized in our research was constituted of 245 former athletes, 50 Brazilians, 30 Chileans and 165 Cubans aged 19 to 75 and with average experience of nearly 14.7 years as active athletes. We also had the participation of 112 trainers/coaches, among them 56 Brazilians, 11 Chileans and 45 Cubans, with experience as high level coaches for 13.7 years. There were also three Brazilian sports physicians. In order to obtain the data we utilized several questionnaires which were given to former athletes, coaches and physicians, each one with different features. The results showed that most former athletes were swiftly taken away from their sports career. Psychological problems and depression, anxiety and stress were the most recurrent problems and from the physicalpathological perspective, the heart problems and obesity had the highest incidence; most former athletes pointed out that their retirements did not have any social repercussion. Regarding the orientation the athletes receive from their coaches regarding the untraining process, most of them claimed not having this orientation. In relation to the coaches, most of them do not provide guidance or orientation to their athletes about the process but they acknowledge that it is important to orientate them regarding their retirement. The researched physicians bear strong knowledge about the studied process and all agree to its importance. Finally we may state that Sports Un-training is a problem present in many countries with the same characteristics, especially lack of knowledge by coaches and athletes and the main fact they do perform this process.
