RESUMO

The isokinetic contraction is more efficient than conventional methods to achieve muscular mass and strength gains. Recommendations for rest interval (RI) between sets of isokinetic contractions are still undefined. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to observe the effects of different RI between sets on isokinetic performance in elderly. To verify the muscular isokinetic performance (Biodex System 3) were observed the variables peak torque (PT), total work (TW) and fatigue index (FI) in twelve men (66.86 3.92 years; 76.13 13.41 kg; 1.69 0.05 m) from unilateral knee extension at angular velocities of (AV) 60, 90 and 120s-1 through three sets of ten repetitions (3x10) in each velocity with a respective rest interval (1, 2 or 3 minutes) between each set in a random way. One way analyses of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures was applied to verify significant differences between and within sets. Mainly findings were acquired at AV of 60 and 90s-1. At 60s-1 when applied 1 min of RI was observed significant effect in PT within session on 3rd set when compared with 1st and 2nd sets. Moreover, at 2 and 3min of RI sessions lower PT was observed on 3rd set compared with 2nd (p<0.05). When observed significant effect between session, lower PT was demonstrated on 2nd set of 1min of RI compared to 3min of RI and between the 3rd set of 1min of RI compared with 2 and 3min of RI session (p<0.05). For TW significant effect was observed within session on 3rd set compared to all others (RI 1 and 2min). In addition, significant effect was observed when applied RI of 3min only at 3rd set compared to 2nd (p<0.05). Moreover, at AV of 90s-1 significant effect was observed for PT when applied RI of 1min on 3rd set compared with 1st, the same way when applied 2min of RI on 3rd set compared with 1st and 2nd sets (p<0.05). On the other hand, lower values were observed between sessions when compared the sets (1st, 2nd and 3rd) of 1min of RI between the respective sets from 2min and 3min of RI, as well at 3rd sets between 2 and 3min of RI (p<0.05). In relation to TW at 90s-1 lower values within sessions were observed at 1min of RI compared with 1st and 2nd sets. The same behavior was observed at 2min of RI session. However, differences between sessions were observed at all sets at 1min of RI compared to 2 through 3min of RI, as well between 1st and 2nd sets of 2min of RI compared with 3min of RI (p<0.05). These data demonstrated that, during a model of strength training, isokinetic muscular performance is dependent of RI in elderly men, which suggests readjust on it, with increases of RI on subsequent sets.
