RESUMO

This research has endeavored to analyze the constitution of the Special Education field in Sergipe as immerse in the national and international conjuncture of the XIX and early XX centuries, through the production of Sergipe s intellectuals in the medical and juridical areas. Its main theoretical contributions lie on the appropriation and representation categories as formulated by Chartier, the field as devised by Bourdieu, normal and abnormal ones by Foucault and Canguilhen; in addition to the contribution offered by XIX century works and others about the XIX century and early XX century. The study is also inspired in the new cultural story presuppositions, namely the History of Education and the History of Special Education, and contributes to the understanding of this field of knowledge constitution through the relationship among knowledge as well as medical and judicial power and their influence on socially materialized appropriations and representations in a period when caring and educating became imperative in order to civilize subjects who were considered abnormal.
