RESUMO
This study objectified to analyze an educational process with family caregivers of patients presenting swallowing problems due to Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) in order to minimize bronchoaspiration risks. Descriptive research with a qualitative approach was held with caregivers of patients presenting swallowing problems due to CVA. Twenty-one (21) caregivers participated in the investigation, rendering care to patients who had undergone one or multiple CVAs, using a feeding tube and also oral-eating patients under bronchoaspiration risk, identified by clinical observation. Educational process was developed by a nurse from March to August/2006, with theoretical classes, once a week, to family members and probable home caregivers. After hospital discharge planning was set up, they had practical bedside directions on CVA causes, constraints, restrictions, feeding tube and oral eating care. Patients caregivers of those patients with oral eating or feeding tube were applied a questionnaire on their family status; types of food consistency; identification of causes and bronchoaspiration risks; patients posture while eating; feeding tube types, recommendations and maintenance care in order to feed patients at home. The same instrument was applied to caregivers before theoretical guidance and one month after hospital discharge in order to analyze guidance effectiveness. Results evidenced that 76.19% of patients presented serious swallowing problems; 80.85 made use of feeding tubes; 61.90% used nasogastric tube; 19.05% had oral eating; 80.95% of the caregivers had not been passed on any information by health professionals; 95.24% found it important to receive information; and 71.43% feel prepared to take on patients home care. Thus, it was concluded that the educational process for caregivers of dysphagic patients due to CVA was efficient as it improved caregivers knowledge in order to carry out patients home care.
