RESUMO

This descriptive and exploratory study aimed to investigate the compatibility of virtual environments with the teaching-learning process in psychiatric nursing through the development and implementation of an online course about personality and mood disorders, available in the Teleduc environment. The study investigated the use of the virtual environment during the course, the students opinion about technology, social competencies to interact in the academic context, the Course and the Interaction, the teaching-learning process that occurred during discussions of clinical cases in online chats, the association between social competency characteristics (sociability, aggressiveness, leadership and introversion) and the use of communication tools. The sample consisted of 32 undergraduate students at the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing, who attended the psychiatric nursing course. Data were collected through records of the virtual environment and the application of the Indentification Questionary, Questionary of Social Characterist to Colleagues in the Academic Scope and of the Questionnaire of Opinion on the Technology, the Course and the Interaction. The results were analysed by descriptive statistics and correlation tests, using SPSS and content analysis. The joint work of different specialists produced an educative cartoon that reflects the reality of these students and psychiatric nursing care. The sample presented average levels of sociability, leadearship, introversion and low agressiveness. Sociability and leardership presented a positive correlation with the use of communication tools, while introversion and agressiveness indicated a negative correlation. The discussions through online chat sessions permeated the acquisition of knowledge, procedures, attitudes and values and promoted students active participation. It was concluded that virtual environments are compatible to support the teaching-learning process in psychiatric nursing, creating new educational possibilities and keeping an open channel for information and communication. The development of online courses demands joint work by specialists in the subject, in computer resources and distance education pedagogy. The biggest difficulties of the students seem to be related to have initiatives and to develop process of a more critical and reflective auto-learning. The social ability contributes for the participation of the student in distance educative processes. The institutions must observe the students attitude with regard to interpersonal relationships. Knowing students personal characterists helps to develop customized teaching. The improvement in the quality of nursing care delivery to psychiatric patients justifies the investment in the nurse training process.
