RESUMO

Forests may be considered a mosaic of vegetation patches at different succeeding stages. Spatial and temporal variations in the degree of the canopy cover were compared at sites, some of which flooded sporadically in the Mata dos Godoy State Park (23°27 S, 51°15 W) South Brazil. The readings were taken seasonally in 1002m plots using a spheric densiometer from spring 1995 to winter 1996. The flood area had a greater spatial and temporal variation in the canopy cover than the unflooded areas, which indicates that it is more open and lighter. The greater heterogeneity in the flood area may be due to structural characteristics in the canopy (greater spacing between individual trees, lower canopy and less stratified canopy), more frequent natural disturbances and a greater degree of deciduity. These causes seem to be related in some way to the presence of the river and flooding and their consequences
