RESUMO

This work aims to analyze how the spaces for young participation are created and utilized. For doing so, it was carried out a case study based on two young groups from Peixinhos, a district in the city of Olinda â PE. By identifying several elements in the recent literature on young groups, it was possible to perceive that the âcultureâ has represented an important binding factor for the recent young actions in Brazil. Besides, those new actions have some characteristics that make it difficult to identify a unified discourse for the youth today. Those actions are more diffused, local-based and short ranged. Because of this fact, the youth today is defined in the plural. Regarding the case analyzed here, it was identified that the actions of these groups in occupying a public building in the neighborhood resulted in more attention from the political authorities, which adopted some improvement measures for the community. These young groups, who were discriminated for their own community before, achieved respect and acknowledgment through the action they develop. As the main consequence of those actions, according to the interviewees, it occurred an important change in the neighborhoodâs image. In the past it was known as a âdangerousâ and âviolentâ place and today it is known for its cultural diversity
