RESUMO

The subject ofthis work is the Mariners Rebellion in 1910. This was not the first neither the last fight for better working conditions at the War Marine. But this was for sure the one to achieve a great notoriety in the sense that it fought for the termination of corporal punishment and to threaten the Republic federal capital city of bombing if the requirements were not fulfilled. But, instead of reading this as a reaction to the on-board punishments, we have decided to inquire the past relationship between mariners and officials and also to understand alI the meanings this physical punishment had for these men. In short, we wanted to know why this kind of punishment was still ruling at the War Marine until 191O. Crime proceedings, police and military official letters, ministerial reports, printed press, memories and novels were great sources to develop this work. During this search, we came across conflicts that revealed the impact of different values and habits between mariners and officials on the several daily actÍvities while on-board or in-land. Following this route, we also found out the first signs of racism and homosexualism in the crew and how these facts made them different to the sight of others, creating moments of violence, disparities and financial losses in the carreer. These differences and conflicts were part of the reality of the war ships during most of the 19thcentury. The punishment would be added to that daily routine, and was not contradicted till then. Not only officials but also mariners saw in it an "expedient" to impose respect and limits to any kind of feeling. But, from the second half of the 19th century on, the situation began to change. New European ideologies and the republic and abolitionist movements have brought criticism to the physical punishment, in such a way that the prime minister of the new political regime had no other way but to extinguish it from the punishment manuais. However, it has come back and lasted until 1910, when finally something concrete has shaked the political power
