RESUMO

This thesis, which was developed at the Graduate Program in Education, specifically at the research program on Cultural Diversity and Indigenous Education, aims at analyzing and understanding the discussion on race issues in a school located in the municipality of Costa Rica, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, as well as the possibility of establishing a cooperation with an association called Afro-Rica in the context of that discussion. The research project results from educations need to review its attitude toward the traditional way of dealing with cultural differences, particularly in the case of blacks, since in this case difference has always been associated with notions of superiority and contempt by white society. The research project included interviews with elementary school teachers and members of the Afro-Rica group. The discussion begins with the history of the construction of racism in Brazil, highlighting the peculiar form of Brazilian racism shaped by the myth of racial democracy and the ideology that proposes a whitening of the population. It then describes interculturality as an instrument to analyze racial relations, stressing the interaction between the differences, which have to be seen as results of historical cultural constructions. It finally discusses racism in that municipality on the basis of statements by Afro-Brazilians, who characterized it as a municipality that underwent a white and racist settlement process. The school is described starting from the perspective of the teachers. According to them, the discussion on race issues is still being constructed and is not sufficient for the deconstruction of the racism that pervades the school and often blames the black students themselves for their problems. A demand that is voiced by all teachers is the need for training courses to adequately equip them for the discussion on race issues and the deconstruction of the myth of racial equality that prevents people from seeing the differences. The contribution of the Afro- Rica association is also presented in this context. Although it is only incipient, such cooperation may increasingly contribute, insofar as it is intensified, to the deconstruction of racist relationships and discrimination processes still present in the school.
