RESUMO

Brazilian music, throughout almost the whole XXth Century, had a direct relation to the national identity, in a moment in which the nation corresponded to a singular State and a singular People, while the relationship among these three elements and the rest of the world was articulated by the opposition internal/external. In a contemporary time, in which the national identity is forged in a global space, the relationships of forces working on its formation are modified. Studying the Brazilian music in this global space through the discourses related to identity around this music makes a clearer scenario in which identities are ranked by a complex organization of forces ever more controlling and excluding. If at one hand, we note the surging of possibilities of diverse identification for generating social meaning ? which we will call, beside national identity, world and restricted identities ? at the other hand the forces for individual or collective approaches to these diverse identities are unfairly distributed. In a global level capitalist reality ? in terms of music dominated by a complex cultural industry, formed by technological and phonographic instances and by fairly consolidated ideologies (striving to establish an air of cultural democracy to the discussions) ? to some individuals and groups, fixed identity is claimed, while to others multiple identifications are offered. In a world in which mobility is a positive factor of social differentiation, the inequality is given. Besides, the legitimacy of the mobility in the globalization becomes also evident in the identities. Those more capable to be inserted into the global space and, therefore, more capable to be adapted to the hegemonic patterns, will have higher value in a world market of symbols. Thinking about the music, the artists that break through in the world market should cope with, at one hand their own capacity of moving through different identities, and at the other hand with the value held by their identity ? conditioned by the industry. Possibilities of freedom and of oppression are presented in the same field. However, the pieces owned by the players of this game do not carry the same strength
