RESUMO

Superconducting magnets based on metallic superconducting wires (NbTi and Nb3Sn) are used to generate high magnetic fields in a compact winding without Joule heating by applying current density above 1.5x 108 A/m2 at liquid helium temperature (4.2 K). In order to sustain high currents without heat dissipation structural and electrical materiaIs must withstand strong mechanical efforts which arises from winding, heat treatment, cooling down to operating temperature and electrical current charging processes. The electrical and mechanical ca1culations are done for two concentric windings connected in series aiming to generate 12 T magnetic induction in a cylindrical bore region. The construction steps inc1uding the materiaIs and equipment development needed for winding, Nb3Sn formation heat treatment, and vacuumlpressure impregnation of epoxy resin are presented along with protection circuit analysis, simulation, and testing. The experimental results are compared with the designed values as well as those available in the literature. It was developed successfully the design and construction scheme to build high magnetic field magnets
