RESUMO

Done in the light of the research-action, this dissertation outlines the history of its author, a school speech therapist, while she conducts a study group with a group of school teachers so as to find the roots of the students difficulties in spelling, so that it would be possible to develop pedagogical activities to counter these difficulties. The initial diagnosis of such difficulties and the development of the learning and pedagogical reassessment processes are described, as well as the post-evaluation of the work done by the participants, including the researcher herself, who also makes a statement about her own personal development in the process. A correlation is also established between the subject of spelling difficulties and other aspects of the acquisition of the written language, and a good deal of the knowledge obtained and the conclusions and results arrived at by the group are presented aiming at making out of this very text a contribution to other teachers and school staff who are challenged by problems of spelling acquisition.
