RESUMO

This dissertation investigates the determinants and the impacts of banking denationalization in Brazil, caused by foreign bank entry in the retail banking market, beggining in 1997. First of all, I discuss foreign capital participation in the sector between the end of the XIX century and the eve of Real Plan implementation, in 1994, the period before recent denationalization. The analysis of the determinants of this complex process is split in repulsion factors (external) and attraction ones (internal). Among the repulsion factors - those responsible for banking firm decision to expand abroad - I point out the financial globalization process and the economic and monetary integration in Europe, the origin of foreign banks that made acquisitions in brazilian banking market. The presentation of these factors is complemented with the criticism of the internationalization s conventional explanations. As to the attraction factors - which explain the foreign banks choice for Brazil -, I discuss the role of inflationary stabilization, the threat of a systemic banking crisis in 1995-96 and the restructuring that follows, besides the importance of domestic legislation changes as a requirement to entry. The dissertation presents toa a detailed description of the most relevant operations that led to banking denationalization and quantifies foreign participation in this market. Finally, the potential, ex-ante impacts of denationalization are compared with empirical evidence observed in the brazilian banking sector
