RESUMO

The present dissertation intended to contribute to the study of marital life. Onto this purpose, a marital intimacy instrument was adapted and an instrument for sexual satisfaction built. The five articles that constitute the dissertation illustrate the theoretical discussion on the themes as well as the construction and validation process of the measures developed. In addition, a correlational study of variables is proposed. The characteristic of the measures Marital Intimacy Questionnaire and Sexual Satisfaction Inventory showed good psychometric qualities and becomes an option of evaluation resource. The correlation study showed similar rates of marital intimacy between males and females. However, men reported higher rates of emotional sexual satisfaction and with specific sexual activities. Furthermore, the role of satisfaction with orgasm in men s marital intimacy reveals the importance that physical pleasure has to the sensation of closeness. Issues related to individuality and commitment to the relationship was also found to have an important role in the experience of intimate relationship.
