RESUMO

The evolution of high performance equipment as the small packed columns is one of the most important preoccupations in chemical engineering research and design nowadays. The packed columns are important for large-scale vapour-liquid operations such as distillation, absorption, extraction and stripping. These operations, normally require large colmns to obtain high separation degrees, where the gravity is the driving force for the flowing and contact of the two phases. The literature reports that rotating packed beds, which replace gravity force by centrifigal force named "Higee-high gravity", present high efficiency with reduced dimension, as compared to the conventional packed bed. The unit is based on a centrifuge in which the packing of a conventional distillation columns is compressed in a doughnut-shaped disc (rotor). The purpose of this work was to study the mass transfer and efficiency behaviour of a rotating packed distillation column. The binary system n-hexane/n-heptane was used under atmospheric pressure and total reflux conditions. In this system, the packed bed can be operating from 500 a 2500 rpm, which provides gravitational forces from 22 to 560 g based on the arithmetic mean radius. The rotor was 0.4 m in height and 0.16 m in diameter and ceramic Rasching rings packing from 0.7 and 0.9 cm in diameter...
