RESUMO

The objective of this work was to develop an expert system (ES) to determinate the land capability classification, which aids land use planning. The ES was developed with CLlPS (C Language Integrated Production System), an expert system shell designed by NASA. The inference process used was forward chaining". It was considered more suitable for this work, since the land capability determination starts with ali data of the region studied. For this reason the inference system chosen was the "data-driven". Many tests were done to verify consistency of the knowledge base. A scenario with eight different soil classes was created for the validation of the system. The subjectivity of land classification influenced the validation process, since the evaluation was submitted to expertise and knowledge of human experts. The validation showed that the ES was more rigorous than human experts with regard to slope steepness classes, since it considers them taking account other factors that present major restriction to land use. The land capability rules should be reviewed because there was an advance in soil science concerning morphology and classification aspects. Periodic reviews are made in land classification systems, when advances in soil science occur, and, in this case, modifications at knowledge base are easy. The ES developed is simple to use, and does not need sophisticate hardware. The expert system user does not need to be an expert, although have some knowledge about this subject is necessary to answer questions done by the system. The expert system shell, CLlPS, is not difficult to work, although some knowledge about programming using a high levellanguage is necessary
