RESUMO

This work intends to produce a review of existing phonological research and to deepen knowledge on the characteristics of phonetic consonantal and vocalic segments in order to propose a new alternative for the phonological analysis. The Akwe-Xerente language is spoken in villages near the city of Tocantínia - TO, which is about 90 km from the capital Palmas. The villages, where our assistants live are: Centro, Salto and Recanto. The study will take into account the results already obtained by other research on phonology, like the studies of Mattos (1973), Braggio (2005), and Grannier &Souza (2005). This language, according Rodrigues (1986), belongs to the Macro-Jê branch and to the linguistic family Jê. The data for this research were recorded with native speakers who are bilinguals in Portuguese-Akwe-Xerente that live in villages in the reservation Tocantínia along the banks of the Tocantins river in the state of the same name.
