RESUMO

This thesis aims at investigating the way in which gender relationships affect language and can be understood as an analyzable phenomenon in their straightforward relationship with society. Using the French Discourse Analysis branch as the theoretical background, this research attempts to understand the notion of the feminine, not only as a grammatical category, but as a force engendering intersubjective subjects, namely subjects of discourse. One of the priorities is to scrutinize its constitution in a specific situation of interlocution, taking as its corpus a range of texts compiled in the book Não se pode amar e ser feliz ao mesmo tempo o consultório sentimental by Nelson Rodrigues, made up of letters written by the author in the Rio De Janeiro newspaper Diário da Noite in 1949. In this newspaper, Nelson Rodrigues, identified as female interlocutor Myrna, replied to readers, mostly women, who wrote to him in order to get romantic advice. A selection of analytical procedures was established, ranging from formal devices of utterances to specific syntactic, textual and discursive categories through which a number of historical, social and ideological markers were identified and by which dissymmetry concerning gender relationships materializes in language. Furthermore, I attempt to grasp the material and historical conditions in which the playwright began to use his feminine alter-ego, and how, consequently, these texts participate in a discourse that relates the feminine with love and the sorrows it entails, referring to specific images and concepts born from so-called romantic love and concretized in cultural practices throughout the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Thus, the writers stylistic marks, the fictional and aesthetic features of his texts, do not constitute the aim of this analysis, but rather the thematic regularities, the procedures of approaching the feminine and the grammatical devices that constitute Nelson Rodrigues feminine mise-en-scene, materialize the discursive, that is, a certain discursive formation. In this fashion, the work employs politics and individual identity in its conception of the linguistic phenomenon.
