RESUMO

Regarding the mechanisms for water supplying in nineteenth-century Pelotas, this thesis deals with the transformations caused in the urban environment by the implementation of piped water nets. Thus, it traces the appearance of the first hydraulic companies in the province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul, evaluates different proposals for water supply systems and compares the water supply proposals designed for the three main Rio Grande do Sul cities, namely Porto Alegre, Pelotas and Rio Grande. It describes the nineteenth-century proliferation of epidemics and the urban environmental interventions in order to embellish, sanitize, and hygienically improve cities. Also, it outlines certain infra-structure works hold in Pelotas in the end of 19th Century, particularly those maintained by private companies for welfare state. Hence, it focuses the Companhia Hidráulica Pelotense and the quotidian city life during the period of thirty seven years that this company supplied water for Pelotas. Differences between Pelotas and Rio Grande hydraulic companies are drawn as well as the problems undergone by them, namely water shortage, thefts, clandestine connections and resistance to consumption regularization, and the solutions then implemented. Another topic explained in this thesis is the municipalization of this company in the beginning of the 20th Century. Due to the building of the piped water net, demolitions, modifications and permanencies can also be observed in Pelotas industrial architectural heritage. Based on the study of architectural designs submitted to Intendência Municipal de Pelotas between 1895 and 1908, this thesis acknowledges that, despite the pre-existence of piped water nets in the city, Pelotas residential buildings slowly presented hygienic environments and equipments. The thesis states that home interiors presented little alteration in contrast with the external image of residential buildings, whose facades were a major concern in the designs for Pelotas at the turn of the 20th Century.
