RESUMO

The species Artemisia vulgaris L; is an aromatic perennial rhizome-like herbaceous plant. It is a little branched erect plant belonging to the family Asteracea (Compositae), botanic synonymy Artemisia verlotorum Lamotte. It is regarded as an important producer of essential oil very utilized in folk medicine. The study was designed to evaluate physiological aspects, leaf structural characteristics and content of essential oil of A. vulgaris submitted to different light spectra: full sunshine and under colored screens (50%) black, blue and red. The results point out that in the full sunshine occur greater accumulation of essential oil, less growth in height, greater ratio of dry biomass root/shoot, smaller content of chlorophyll and greater of caroteneoids, greater thickness of the leaf blade and greater density of trichomes. Under the blue screen, there was a larger leaf area. The plants cultivated under black screen showed higher number of chloroplastides in the palisade parenchyma, greater number of starch grains per chloroplastide in the palisade and spongy parenchymas. Under shading, the plant maintained under red screen presented greater content of essential oil.
