RESUMO

Hand Hygiene (HH) is one of the most important measures for infection control; however, it is observed that in fact the compliance with this behavior is lower than desirable. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that contribute to the formation of behavior intention of HH practice in nurses, using an extension of the Theory of Planned Behavior. This was an exploratory study conducted with 24 nurses of the Intensive Care and Infirmary Units of public and private hospitais of the city of Campinas (SP), Brazil. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, recorded in cassettes and transcribed in order to identify the Attitude, Normative, Control and Perceived Risk Beliefs related to HH. Qualitative analysis of the data showed, among the Attitude Beliefs, the following advantages: comfort, safety, protection and infection prevention; as disadvantages: hand injuries; and as feelings: a pleasant, necessary, cumbersome and boring activity. Among the Normative Beliefs social referents were pointed out: - Positive: nursing team and patient; Negative: doctor and medical supervision; and Positive and/or Negative: Nursing Practice, Continuing Education Service and Cross Infection Control Commission Nurse. Among the Perceived Contrai Beliefs some factors that facilitate and/or inhibit the behavior were pointed out: environment, human resources, type of delivery of care, habit, training, required time for HH and comprehension of the importance of HH. Among the Perceived Risk Beliefs the risk for hand injuries and the no-behavior risks were pointed out: increased exposure to microorganisms and chemical substances, with the consequence of greater cross-infection and occupational transmission and risk for contamination of family members. The obtained data will support the preparation of a psychometric scale, which will be used to understand and predict the HH behavior among nurses
