RESUMO

Heliotropium transalpinum is a vegetable species, which belongs to the Boraginaceae family and it is popularly known as bico de corvo (crow s beak). It is a bush with white flowers and is found in Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil (from Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul). A study was made of the analgesic properties of the hydroalcoholic extract (H.E.), as well as ofthe qualitative compositions of the H transalpinum. In specific tests, the H.E. has shown that in the dosage of 1 gram per kilogram, it has had an effect which increases the hypnotic action of the pentobarbital. In the analgesia test (the hot plate), the results have shown that the H.E. has increased the latent period when the dosage of 1 gram per kilogram and 2 grams per kilogram were administered. The analgesia was more effective 120 minutes after administration of 1 gram per kilogram of the H.E. In the test for the 74 dosage of 2 grams per kilogram, the analgesic effect was obtained 30 minutes after it had been administered. On analysing the average time in which the mice stayed on the hot plate, when the dosages of 1 gram per kilogram and 2 grams per kilogram of H.E. were administered, we can conclude that the analgesic effect of the H.E. of the Heliotropium transalpinum depends on the dosages and the period of administration
